Figure Work

Stephens’s acrylic and watercolor figure work tends to be more abstracted than the oil portraits and is influenced by his organic landscape work.  While many represent a continuation of the Heroine Series, using local models, others were developed using royalty free references.  Water based media by definition is more fluid, they dry faster and lend themselves to multiple layer application. Using bigger brushes, sprayers, rollers, pallet knives, even fingers – paint is applied transparently during multiple sessions until an image emerges. Its surprising what can happen when you let go.
